The following report of the 40th Anniversary Lunch was published in the Tunbridge Wells Courier on 31st May 2013
In the previous week's Courier, the following had been published in “From the Archives”
"May 24 1963: John Thompson Spare, a 37 year-old teacher became the youngest mayor of Tunbridge Wells on Wednesday. The ceremony in the council chamber was watched by his headmaster, Mr S.W.Stolton, and the boys of the mayor’s class at St. John’s school.”
Almost exactly fifty years later, on 16th May 2013, the same John Thompson Spare OBE, in a witty speech, proposed the toast of “Probus Royal Tunbridge Wells and the Ladies” at the Club’s fortieth anniversary lunch.
John is one of the longest-standing members of RTW Probus, having joined the Club in 1989.
