Come and share your striking or funny experiences with those of others like you and enjoy absorbing talks by entertaining speakers.

 

For over 40 years, members of the PROBUS Club of Royal Tunbridge Wells (just one of an affiliated network across the UK), who are retired and semi-retired professionals and people from a business background, have been enjoying each other’s company, convivial conversation, making new friends and listening to fascinating, memorable talks by some equally fascinating characters.

 

Every third Thursday of the month, we meet in the classic setting of the High Rocks Inn, for 2 courses, a wine raffle and eagerly anticipated talk.  You could find yourself, chatting to a former doctor, surveyor, antique silver dealer, professional musician, accountant, vicar, company director, military officer, lawyer, banker, schoolteacher, marketeer, civil servant, publisher or engineer.

 

Sometimes, your chat will be revelatory, intriguing, amusing or send a shiver down your spine, because your table probably packs in travel to over 100 countries and pleasing memories of the great and the good - together with the bad and downright dangerous, frightening or disastrous…!  An engineer and former doctor comparing notes about the unwelcome attention of the competing Medellin and Cali drug cartels in Colombia, perhaps?  Two days surviving the prospect of the keel detaching from a 30 ton Ocean racing yacht in the South China Sea, before it reached safety in the Philippines?

 

Whatever your background, you’ll get to share the weird and wonderful. 

 

As for speakers, few members will ever forget the inspirational, upright, yet humble Terry Waite, demonstrating that his cell ceiling for nearly 5 years was below his chin.  Or perhaps 100year old Flt. Lt. Colin Bell DFC, WWII Mosquito bomber pilot, eloquently and compassionately describing his perspectives on RAF Bomber Command’s effectiveness.

 

Cycling solo across Africa, or Florence Nightingale’s epic story - you’ll experience a variety of talks to suit all tastes.
